We travelled to Templetuhoy on Saturday evening for our first round game v Borrisokane.

It was a lovely evening sun was shining and the sod was in top condition. As both teams done their warm up, word filtered through that Willie & Lee & Richie didn’t pass fitness tests and would have to take a spot on the bench, some good news was that Mikey Whelan was fit and could take his place in the half Back line.

As 7 o clock rolled around, the ref got the game underway and finally it was good to have championship hurling back.

Both teams got off to blistering starts with both sets of forwards slightly on top as we went score for score.

Conor Whelan who was popping up everywhere was causing Borrisokane all kinds of problems.

As we entered the first water break (we‘re not a fan of these breaks at all) Davins trailed by 1 point, 5 -4.

The second quarter was much of the same, no team able to get on top as again we exchanged scores and as the ref blew for half time with the score at 8 points all both teams would have fancied their chances for the second half.

The second half was in much the same fashion as the first, fast and fiery with no quarter asked for given.

With the game neck and neck, Borrisokane seemed to grab the initiative, starting to find space in our defence, they got their necks in front pushing their lead out to 4 points come the water break.

As the game entered the last 10 minutes and it looked liked it was slipping away from us, Pa Harris stepped up to a 21 yard free, and like a rocket, he buried it into the back of the net to bring the game back to a one point game.

The last 10 mins saw Borrisokane tap on another score and after some goalmouth scrambles, in which we just couldn’t get the ball over the line the ref blew his whistle, with the full time score of Borrisokane - 19 Davins 1-14

It was tough to come out on the wrong side of a close game. We fought hard and gave everything but we were just lacking a bit on the day, the players to man stood up and left everything on the field.

All is not lost yet, in two weeks we travel to New inn to take on Knockavilla Kickhams. With players returning from injury we have every chance.

Hard luck to players and management
